I have been an artist for many years now. My passion for drawing and painting was ignited at secondary school where our art teacher would let us put down on paper anything and everything that our creativity would allow. At college, where I took art as an A-Level, I had a little more direction from my tutor, and I would paint mostly still life. It was here that I first used oil paint, charcoal and pastel, and I have been using these media ever since.

 

After several years of creating work from varied sources such as photographs, still life, and just plain old imagination, I started to yearn for a new challenge, to stretch myself and to hone my skills. I decided to take a class in life drawing/painting at an Adult Education Centre, and it transformed my work.

 

For those of you who may not know, life drawing is done in the presence of a live model, who is usually naked. My tutor was an inspirational man by the name of Fred Bromfield. He is a fabulous artist whom I admire greatly. He was taught his craft at Camberwell, the famous art school in the 1960's, by none other than Frank Auerbach, the expressionist.

 

I had the pleasure of attending this class for 8 years until Fred retired, and nearly all of the nudes you see on my website were created at Fred's classes either in one sitting or refined later in my studio. He taught me about relationships in composition, about brushwork, and most of all that the paint itself, and the way it is expressed on the canvas, is the true glory of any work.
